I have a lot of ideas. But part of making something happen is knowing how to say no to everything else. So, I’m going to keep this list short in an attempt to keep my eye on the prize: seeing these projects through.
Impulse Bye!
what & why
A mobile app for tracking the things you want to impulsively buy. It shows you how much money you haven’t spent by not buying the things on your list, as well as provides journal prompts to help fight the impulsivity. I want to make this, because while I don’t spend thousands of dollars on things I don’t need, I do spend more than I’d like, and on things that I could do without.
how
I’ve been using FlutterFlow for the past week to build out a proof of concept. I’ve never used it before, so there’s a lot I have no clue about, but so far I’ve found it to be an easy and fun tool to use.
31 Zines for Serious Scribbles Shop
what & why
An Etsy shop I started at the beginning of 2023, around when I turned 31. I made the goal for myself to make 31 zines this year. The main goal with this project was to build trust in myself by doing what I said I would. Zines felt small enough, but also offered plenty of room for creativity. And 31 felt like a number that wasn’t too big, but also didn’t feel trivial. I started the year off strong, doing one zine a week, but have been stuck at 7 zines for the past few months. There are 34 weeks left this year, so I’ve still got time. I’ve got ideas. And I’m building my resolve.
how
I originally planned to do all of them as printables, but after taking a couple of RISO workshops, I want to print a few using RISO printing. I have been using an app called Concepts to design them, but am now trying to find a new one to use that works better with text. I’m trying Canva, as well as Adobe Fresco.
My personal website
what & why
I can’t find where this quote came from, but it was about why the author kept notebooks:
Otherwise, life would not accumulate, but merely pass.
I think I wanted to make my website a list of lists, from ideas to skills to favorites, in an attempt to express the accumulation that is me? TBH, I’m struggling to pinpoint why exactly I want a personal website. I’ve had some version of one since starting to work in tech in 2015, so I think this project is more about creating a representation of me that resonates now.
how
I’m using Vue for the UI and AirTable as a content management system. The site is hosted on GitHub pages.
